As many of you know, fall is my absolute favorite season. My recipe today is a miniaturized version of one of my favorite apple recipes—apple crisp. From a young age, I’ve loved to make apple crisp. I got the original recipe from a Betty Crocker Cookbook and I’ve continually adapted the recipe over the years. It’s one of the few desserts that I don’t need a recipe to make!

Key ingredients and why we use them

Apples: I recommend a firm and slightly sweet apple for this recipe.

Cold Unsalted Butter: You want to use unsalted butter in this recipe so you can control the amount of salt. Cold butter helps make the crumble topping come together best. Do not use room temperature butter.

Mini Phyllo Shells: These individual-sized tart shells are the perfect compliment for a rich and decadent part filling. The serving size is ideal for entertaining.

Serving suggestions

These miniature apple tarts are delicious right out of the oven while they are warm.

Homemade whipped cream is the perfect topping for this dessert. While the tarts are cooling, whip up a batch and add a dollop to the top before serving!

Prep Time: 10 minutes minutes

20 minutes minutes

Total Time: 30 minutes minutes

Yield: 15

Ingredients

  • 3 apples peeled and chopped
  • ¼ cup water
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • ¾ cup old-fashioned oats
  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ cup unsalted butter cold
  • 15 Mini Phyllo Shells

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F and place rack in center of the oven.

  • Mix apples, water, white sugar, and ½ teaspoon of cinnamon together in a saucepan, and bring to a simmer over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally. Simmer until apples are partially cooked, about 5 minutes; remove from heat.

  • Mix brown sugar, oats, flour, and 1 teaspoon cinnamon in a separate bowl. Use a pastry cutter or 2 forks to mash cold butter into the oats mixture until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Place about 1 teaspoon of apple filling in each mini phyllo shell. Sprinkle about 1 teaspoon of the topping over the filling.

  • Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown, 15 to 20 minutes. Let them cool before serving.

Notes and Tips

This recipe will make way more than you need to fill your 15 mini phyllo shells. With the leftovers, I recommend using ramekins to make individual-sized apple crisps. They are perfect to warm up in the microwave for dessert or just because!
