Author Notes

One time, I made a similar cookie (one that also called for melted chocolate in the batter) with a Valrhona chocolate bar that, unbeknownst to me, was flavored with orange. My sister and I could not for the lives of us figure out what had made the cookies taste so good. Finally, a teacher (we had baked the cookies for a class of hers) came out with it: "I love the orange flavor," she said completely casually. That said, these cookies are great made with regular semi-sweet Ghiradelli chocolate chips, which is what I used here. More important is the quality of the cocoa powder--I like to use non-alkaline Scharffen Berger —Cara Eisenpress

What You'll Need

Ingredients
  • 3/4 cupsemi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cupunsalted butter
  • 3/4 cupsugar
  • 1 tablespoonmolasses
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoonvanilla extract
  • 1 1/3 cupsall-purpose flour
  • 3/4 teaspoonbaking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoonsalt
  • 3 tablespoonsNatural (not Dutch processed) cocoa powder
  • 3/4 cupmilk chocolate chips
Directions
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. In the microwave, nuke the semi-sweet chocolate chips until just barely melted, stirring to melt the last few chips. Set aside to come to room temperature.
  3. Cream the butter with the sugar and molasses until lightened and fluffy. Add the egg and vanilla extract and cream again. Beat in the melted chocolate.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, baking soda, and cocoa powder. Stir into the butter mixture just until all the flour is incorporated (the dough will be pretty tough). Stir in the milk chocolate chips.
  5. Roll the dough into tablespoon-sized balls. Bake on a parchment-lined baking sheet for 8 minutes, then leave on the parchment to cool at least 10 minutes before eating.

When I made these cookies I used the best possible chocolate I could get my hands on. The cookies really shined with a "depth" of flavor from the richness and layering of so many types of chocolate. These cookies were great and I would make them again.

Mine turned out soft with a deep-deep chockolate flavor, not like those "just cocoa" cookies. Would definately make those again and again.

Are these crispy or soft?

Is this fancy molasses? Thanks

under the picture at author's notes---if you click more at the end the person speaks of making a cookie recipe using some kind of candy bar that apparently had a little orange flavor to it. I love chocolate and orange flavors together so I may give it a try with a little orange flavoring or peel if I can't find said bar.

Excellent chocolate cookie!!No idea what the orange comments have to do with this recipe because there is no orange in it, and almost didn't make it because of that?! Also this is missing a step about adding the melted chocolate, I added before flour and seemed ok.

I am yet to try this but I just read your description. I love the orange flavour too in dark chocolate stuff. chocolate, brownies, hot chocolate, cold chocolate. It was amazing with Alice Medrich's cocoa brownies. I think I will add a tablespoon of zest to this when I make it.

These are fabulous. Really fantastic cookies, with a deep chocolately taste. Have made them 4 times in the last few months.

The receipe needs to be clarified. I made these but didn't know precisely when to add the melted chocolate chips. I did it after the flour. Seemed to work out. Delicious.

Is the recipe suppose to say cocoa powder or milk chocolate chips

And how would one make these the wonderful orange flavored cookies you made by mistake?

kkehrli April 8, 2010

The boys pronounced these delicious! Truly, what's not to like?

Step 3 - Don't forget to add the cooled melted chocolate after you've creamed in the egg and vanilla.
Other thoughts:
The dough is very soft and sticky. I think the cookies perform a little better after the dough has chilled a bit.
